Opposition disappointed over arrest of state PKR youth secretary

MIRI: The opposition front here yesterday expressed its disappointment over the arrest and detention of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) youth secretary.

The 38-year-old aspiring politician was ordered to be remanded for three days for an alleged offence under Section 47 of Society Act 1966 for promoting the ‘Bersih 2.0’ rally, to wit, wearing yellow T-shirt printed with the words ‘Bersih 2.0’ on Monday.

Citing the case involving Kapar MP, Pujut assemblyman Ling Sie Kiong, who is also the suspect’s counsel said that S Manikavasagam was detained and investigated by the police under the same section but was released four hours later after his statement had been recorded.

“I believe that the police here have the same capability and efficiency to complete their investigation. In respect to my client, she was arrested at 1.45pm (Monday) and the police have ample time to carry out an investigation,” he told reporters after a court sitting here yesterday (5 July 2011).

Ling felt that further remand was not necessary and the grounds stated by the police were inadequate and standardised investigation ground.

“We are disappointed by the three days (remand) granted by the court and we feel that the BN government is using the police to deter the people from the planned rally on July 9,” he added.

According to Ling, the police had lately arrested many people but released them immediately after their statements had been recorded.

“Now they are detaining us as the date gets closer. We are very disappointed over this and we know that the police have been pressured by the authority which we understand,” he said.

Pujut assemblyman Fung Pau Teck, the suspect’s counsels Abun Sui Anyit and Majen Panyog were among those present at the press conference.

Meanwhile, according to Abun, the suspect had actually gone to Kuching to visit a family member warded at a hospital there.

“The trip had nothing to do with the rally because everybody knows about the rally now.”

During her (suspect) visit to Kuching, her husband took care of their five children here.

The youngest child is only seven years old.

The husband who works offshore was supposed to report for work but now has to postpone the trip as he has to take care of the children.

Her counsels are hoping that the police would do their investigation fast and in a good manner.

They are also urging the police to release the suspect and not to remand her further after they have completed their investigation.

Wanita KEADILAN launches ‘Wajah’ to tap women power

KUCHING: Wanita KEADILAN officially launched their ‘Wajah’ programme nationwide on Saturday.

Its vice-president Voon Siak Ni said Wajah (short for ‘Wanita KEADILAN Menjelajahi Kampung’) represented an approach to get closer to the community, especially those in the villages.

“Our target group is women from the kampungs, whom we believe do not get enough media exposure. Therefore, we need to create awareness among them about their rights, current social issues and the importance of women in the society,” she said.

Meanwhile, state KEADILAN information chief See Chee How, who launched the programme, said because women were a significant number in the voting population there was need to raise social awareness in order to carry the message for change to the people in the kampungs.

“KEADILAN Women have been very active in championing women’s issues and Wajah is a channel for them to reach out to other women,” said the Batu Lintang assemblyman.

According to state Wanita KEADILAN chief Nurhanim Mokhsen, the party aimed to encourage women to take part in politics even if they were just housewives.

“We want to carry the message across to these women that it is okay to be a housewife and at the same time be in politics or stand up for their rights,” she said.

Thirty women took part in the programme which included cooking demonstrations and makeup sessions.

Pengerusinya, Baru Bian berkata, bermula Januari ini beliau akan ke Johor untuk mengadakan program dan berdailog dengan penduduk Sarawak yang bekerja di sana bagi memastikan mereka mendapat maklumat yang tepat berkaitan perkembangan terkini PKR negeri.

Menurutnya, pertemuan itu penting kerana Johor antara negeri yang mencatatkan penduduk Sarawak yang agak ramai dan jumlah itu seharusnya dimanfaatkan sebaiknya untuk menjana kemenangan PR selain menerangkan dengan lebih jelas hasrat parti untuk menawan Sarawak.

“Kita faham bahawa jalan kemenangan bukannya mudah dan apa jua ruang yang berupaya memberikan kita kemenangan akan dimanfaatkan dengan sebaiknya kerana PKR komited untuk memimpin rakyat di negeri Sarawak ke arah masa depan yang lebih baik,” katanya.

Sehubungan itu, beliau berharap pertemuan itu kelak memberi kesan memberangsangkan bagi pihak parti dan pengundi serta menyeru segenap lapisan penduduk Sarawak yang berada di Johor datang beramai-ramai.

Beliau memberitahu, maklumat berkaitan perkara itu akan dimaklumkan kemudian.

Selain Johor, negeri Pulau Pinang, Perak, Labuan, Negeri Sembilan (sejumlah besar di Seremban) dan Selangor (majoritinya di Lembah Klang) antara negeri yang memiliki penduduk Sarawak yang ramai dan hampir keseluruhannya layak untuk mengundi.

Pada ketika ini, kira-kira 60,000 warga Sarawak bekerja dan tinggal di Johor dengan sebahagiannya merupakan pengundi berdaftar.

PKR vs DAP in Kuching

KUCHING – It’s a case of the usual suspects in the on-going saga between the PKR and DAP in Kuching. The personalities involved do not hide their dislike for each other although they both belong to the same Pakatan Rakyat coalition.

Today Padungan assemblyman Dominique Ng of PKR has filed a defamation suit against Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen of the DAP, the Star reported.

Ng alleged that Chong, the Sarawak DAP state secretary and also Kota Sentosa assemblyman, had defamed him in several press statements published by two Chinese newspapers.

“The most serious allegation was when he accused me of being a ‘stumbling block’ to the co-operation between PKR and DAP,” he said.

Ng (right) also named See Hua Daily News and Sin Chew Media Corp, which published the statements, as co-defendants.

Getting used to suits

In his suit, he would leave it to the court to decide on damages.

Chong (left) said he received the writ on Monday, adding that he was not afraid of the lawsuit.

“I have learnt from experience and am used to it,” he added.

Chong’s father Siaw Chiang earlier brought a similar defamation suit against Ng who was the former state PKR liaison chairman.

“Siaw Chiang sued me over an incident during the March 2008 general election. I have counter-sued him over another incident,” added Ng.

MIRI 13 Julai - Parti Demokratik Progresif Sarawak (SPDP) mahu Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) berhenti daripada berangan-angan untuk menawan kawasan Parlimen Kanowit pada pilihan raya umum akan datang.

Presidennya, Datuk Seri William Mawan Ikom berkata, Parlimen Kanowit merupakan kubu kuat Barisan Nasional (BN) dan sudah tentu parti tidak akan membiarkan penduduk di situ terpedaya dengan hasutan pembangkang.

''Kita tidak akan beri ruang kepada mana-mana pembangkang khususnya PKR untuk memesongkan penyokong BN di kawasan Parlimen Kanowit supaya menyertai pembangkang.

''Malah kita akan bekerjasama dengan Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) dan Parti Rakyat Bersatu Sarawak (SUPP) bagi memastikan kawasan itu ditadbir oleh wakil dari kerajaan BN," katanya selepas mengadakan pertemuan dengan golongan profesional kaum Kelabit di sini baru-baru ini.

Kawasan Parlimen Kanowit diwakili oleh Harun Dagang (BN-PRS), Ahli Dewan Undangan (ADUN) Machan, Datuk Gramong Juna (BN-PBB) dan ADUN Ngemah, Gabriel Adit-GAMBAR (PKR).

Mawan menjelaskan, beliau akan menghadiri sesi bertemu rakyat di Kanowit pada 25 Julai ini bagi menjernihkan isu yang cuba dibangkitkan pihak pembangkang di kawasan itu bagi meraih sokongan mereka.

Tegas Mawan, parti akan terus mempertahankan Kanowit terlepas di tangan pihak pembangkang yang pada masa ini cuba mengelirukan pemikiran penduduk di kawasan itu untuk menentang kerajaan BN.

''Saya berharap penduduk di kawasan Parlimen Kanowit terus menyokong komponen kerajaan BN untuk memastikan segala pelan pembangunan yang dirancang dapat dilaksanakan," katanya.

Tambah beliau, hubungan baik dengan parti komponen BN yang lain turut menjadi elemen penting bagi memastikan objektif parti berjalan lancar.

Kursus KEADILAN Sarawak Diganggu Polis

Polis Sarawak bertindak samseng dengan menyerbu sebuah rumah panjang untuk menyuraikan peserta kursus kewartawanan anjuran Skuad KEADILAN negeri itu.

Sepasukan lapan anggota polis menyerbu rumah panjang itu di Saratok, kira-kira 350 kilometer dari Kuching dan memaksa kesemua 37 peserta meninggalkan rumah panjang itu pada 4 Julai lalu.

Alasan diberi oleh polis ialah kursus kewartawanan itu tidak mempunyai permit.

Ketua Skuad KEADILAN Sarawak Jol-Jolhi Bee berkata beliau telah memohon untuk mendapatkan permit walaupun tidak perlu berbuat demikian kerana kursus itu adalah aktiviti parti yang diadakan dalam dewan tertutup.

“Seperti biasa kesemua permohonan yang dibuat pihak Skuad tidak akan diluluskan,” kata beliau.

“Pihak Skuad merasa kesal dengan tindakan polis yang bertindak di luar batasan dan berat sebelah kerana sebelum ini Biro Tata Negara (BTN) anjuran Barisan Nasional menganjurkan kursus dan tidak memohon sebarang permit. Tidak ada pula serbuan polis bila ia membabitkan aktiviti BN,” tambah beliau.

Bagaimanapun, tindakan keterlaluan polis itu tidak mematahkan semangat peserta yang berpindah ke lokasi lain di Saratok untuk menyambung kursus berkenaan.

“Ini telah menaikkan semangat mereka dengan memahami erti perjuangan apabila hamba-hamba BN bertindak sewenang-wenangnya menyalahguna kuasa mereka,” jelas Jol-Jolhi.

Menurut beliau, pihak Skuad telah lima kali menangguh dan memindahkan program kursus ini kerana setiap kali pihak Skuad telah mengesahkan tempat dan tarikh, pihak BTN akan mengisi dewan dengan program anjuran mereka pada masa dan tempat yang sama.

Merujuk kepada sambutan penduduk terhadap KEADILAN di Saratok, Jol-Jolhi berkata kebanyakkan mereka menyedari bahawa mereka ditipu oleh Kerajaan BN sekian lama dengan pelbagai janji kosong.

Walaupun sudah 46 tahun merdeka dan bergabung dengan Semenanjung Malaysia, Sarawak masih mempunyai kawasan-kawasan luas yang tidak menikmati kemudahan asas seperti bekalan air bersih dan elektrik.

“Contohnya, Kerajaan Negeri berjanji akan menyalurkan bekalan letrik kepada penduduk Saratok sebelum hari Gawai iaitu pada 1 Jun lalu, namun apa yang ada hanya tiang dan pendawaian sahaja, letriknya tidak disalurkan sehingga ke hari ini,” kata beliau.

Banyak lagi janji palsu BN disini membuatkan penduduk rasa muak dan tertipu kerana Sarawak adalah antara negeri terkaya tetapi sebahagian besar rakyatnya terus dibelit kemiskinan.

Dayaks in S’wak BN ’should join PKR’

Sarawak PKR leader Augustine Liom wants Dayaks in Barisan Nasional (BN) to join Pakatan Rakyat to change the state government, so that native customary rights (NCR) to land can be protected.

“It is a matter of urgency that we put into power a government that is kind to us and which is protective of our rights especially land rights and the rights to property as guaranteed in the federal constitution,” he said.

“Any support to the BN and its component parties means only a support to maintain a status quo. We get nowhere. A handful of seats to Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party, a handful seats for Parti Rakyat Sarawak and a handful of seats to Parti Bumiputra Bersatu and Sarawak United People’s Party. That is all.

“We continue to be split, divided, ruled and manipulated and to gradually lose our lands. So we have no choice but to go for a radical or revolutionary change in our political approach.”

Liom, a former judge, was recently appointed to head the land and human rights bureau of the state PKR. He was speaking at a Gawai Dayak dinner organised by the PKR women’s wing in Kuching.

“Our Dayak friends in BN ought to now join us to make this happen to change the state government. Otherwise posterity will not judge then too kindly [...]

“Do not be overwhelmed by your comfort of office that you forget where you have come from. I say ‘comfort of office’. I don’t say ‘comfort of power’ because we know that they do not have that much power.

“Real and meaningful power is in the exclusive domain of chief minister and his handful of inner circle of confidantes. They will not be so kind as to share that power.”

Liom said the results of the March 2008 parliamentary elections have led Sarawakians to realise the political reality.

“The Dayaks now need a national party as their political vehicle. Sarawak National Party is nominally alive. Parti Bansa Dayak Sarawak is dead and gone. Malaysian Dayak Congress has not seen the light of the day.

“What we need is a political vehicle, that is PKR, and we need Malays like Anwar Ibrahim (right) to champion the Dayak cause, not Malays who will divide us or who will rob us of our NCR land.

“We place our trust in PKR and Anwar to champion the Dayak cause. This is a stark political reality we have to come to accept and to live with. There is now no alternative to that.”

‘Daylight robbery’

Liom said BN leaders have denied that the state government had robbed the people of their NCR to land.

“But when longhouse folks wake up one day to find tractors ploughing through their rubber or fruit trees on land they have toiled for generations and are told that the government had granted lease to their land to a logging or plantation company usually connected to people in power - is that not daylight robbery? That is what is happening in our midst,” he said.

He said the government would then tell the landowners to prove that it was NCR land, but that this is difficult when the original settlers have died and because landowners could not acquire NCR by purchase.

“So in effect, it means gradually and eventually NCR land will be no more. And that is the policy of the BN government,” he added.

“Have we heard any BN Dayak leader calling for a survey and for the issuance of titles to NCR land? No one in BN dares to make such a call. On such matter, only one man decides.”

PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who was present, said: “If we want to change Sarawak for the better, then it is now or never.”
At a press conference after declaring open the Batu Kawa PKR service centre earlier, she said the party had held discussions with a number of past and present BN leaders to join the party before the end of the year.

“I am not going to reveal names. Let there be an element of surprise,” she said, without dismissing the possibility that some of these leaders are from Sarawak.
