Roslan said he started donating while undergoing training at Air Itam Police Academy.
“I donated “Aferesis” since 1990 until now. It is very important for
bleeding, leukimia, burnt and dengue and could last for only one week, so the supply has to be consistently be donated,” he told Sarawak Update via phone from Johore Bahru.
“I have nothing else to give to the society, I do not have cash to be a philantrophist. The only thing that I could give to the society and remain anonymous is my blood.
“I usually have to sacrifice my own time to do this. Never did I take any off day or the time slip offered by the Hospital. When I first doing this, my boss was kind of puzzled cost I was donating my blood during a non-blood donation drive.
“My director, Haji Yusoff Akope finally understood and giving me the fullest support,” he said.
When pressed for comment, Roslan said throughout his service in Sarawak he never received any recognition and is not worried about one because he was sincere.
“May be government should introduce some ind of incentive so that more people would come forward and donate blood because not everyone of us is aware of its importance.The Blood Bank of the Sarawak General Hospital have been told to ensure that the blood to be fully utilized to avoid wastage.
Meanwhile, State Health Director, Dr. Mohd Kamal Hassan said the Blood Bank received 14,000 pints of blood annually.
Of the amount 13,000 pints are used, while the balance are kept in the Blood Bank.
However, one percent of the kept blood have to be thrown away due to its expired date which is not safe for use.
Dr.Mohd Kamal said this has contributed to wastage as each blood donor need to undergo health screening before they donate blood, which cost some RM200.00 per test.
However, blood donors are provided free health screening.
Dr Mohd Kamal said this at an appreciation inaugural gathering held at the Fakulti Perubatan dan Sains Kesihatan(UNIMAS) here today for blood donors, blood donor organiser, NGO’s and media organisation who has given the full support towards the blood donation campaign for Kuching Zone in conjunction with the World Blood Donor Day which falls on June 14.
He also praised the chinese community in the urban area for being very supportive in blood donation to save the life of those in needs.
Meanwhile, Ismail Brahim,51, from Kuching was announced as the Model Blood Donor for ‘Whole Blood’ after successfully donated 103 times of blood since 1979 and stopped donating later this year
